On five-year doctor course

In ordinary universities in Japan, a graduate course consists of two-year master course and sequent three-year doctor course. Before 2006 our department had only three-year doctor course. In 2006 we set up five-year doctor course for those who have just graduated from undergraduate courses. This substantially means that we set up two-year master course.

When you read our web pages you should note that the first and second grade of the five-year doctor course correspond to the first and second grade of master courses in ordinary universities, and third, fourth, and fifth grade of five-year doctor course correspond to first, second, and third grade of doctor courses in ordinary universities. We use the expressions for the five-year doctor course throughout this website.

In department of particle and nuclear physics in SOKENDAI, we still have three-year doctor course. For details see “On entrance to SOKENDAI at the third grade”.

Procedure for entering SOKENDAI

If you want to take the five-year doctor course of our department from the first grade, please take the entrance examination. You have to submit applications usually in July, and will take the examination in late August or early September.

For details of the entrance requirements, see
http://www.kek.jp/sokendai/skd.html

We recommend that you make contacts with faculty members whom you want to be your supervisors before you take the examination. First, please make a contact with Prof. Yoshihisa Kitazawa (kitazawa@post.kek.jp).

On entrance to SOKENDAI at the third grade

Those who have finished master courses in ordinary universities can take the five-year doctor course in our department from the third grade (corresponding to the first grade of ordinary doctor course).

The selection for this course is done through interviews. In order for you to enter the course from April, you have to be interviewed in August of the previous year or in January of that year. You have to submit applications in early August and early December respectively. You are required to have M.S., to expect to have M.S. soon, or to be admitted that you are equal to those with M.S. in knowledge. You are not required to have majored in particle or nuclear physics.

For details of the entrance requirements for this course, see
http://www.kek.jp/sokendai/skd.html

If you want to take the course in Theory Group from the third grade, the group members will have a preliminary interview with you before the interview. Please make a contact about it with Prof. Yoshihisa Kitazawa (kitazawa@post.kek.jp) one month before the submission of the application at the latest.
